Charm Industrial has received the first Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) labeled Biochar CDR credits from Isometric. This is a major milestone in ensuring that the Charm Duo — the co-production of biochar and bio-oil via fast pyrolysis — represents the highest quality and most cost effective path to removing carbon from the atmosphere.
This past week, Charm completed validation and verification of the first-ever Isometric issued biochar carbon removal credits. The credits are issued under Isometric’s Biochar Production and Storage Protocol, one of the most rigorous standards in the industry.
“With this offtake, we’re delivering on the largest biochar carbon removal deal to date,” reflects Harris Cohn, Charm’s Head of Commercial Partnerships. “But beyond volume, we care deeply about quality and permanence—and that’s exactly why Isometric was the right partner.”
In addition to verified climate impact, these credits demonstrate the potential co-benefits of biochar based CDR.
The biochar credited by Isometric comes from the Charm Duo — our co-production of bio-oil and biochar—enabling long-term storage of ~70% of the carbon from the biomass feedstock we start with. In this case, we utilized wildfire fuel reduction thinnings. These are small logs without a commercial market that need to be removed from forests and communities along the Front Range of the Rockies in order to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire. We partner with farmers interested in using biochar as a solution to help water-stressed soils improve water retention and increase productivity.
Isometric’s Biochar Protocol sets a new industry benchmark by requiring projects to demonstrate high-quality, additional removals through:
200-Year Durability Credits are only awarded for the fraction of biochar that meets a conservative hydrogen-to-carbon (H:C) ratio threshold, aligned with forthcoming EU carbon removal regulations. This ensures that every tonne of biochar credited is projected to remain stable in soils for at least two centuries.
Robust Feedstock Accounting Every biomass feedstock undergoes a cradle-to-gate greenhouse-gas baseline and counterfactual emissions analysis under Isometric’s Biomass Feedstock Accounting Module. By rigorously tracing supply chains and quantifying avoided emissions, this module guarantees that our feedstock sourcing is both additional and sustainable.
By combining a conservative carbon-stability test with stringent feedstock due diligence, Isometric ensures that each Charm Biochar credit is traceable, scientifically defensible, and aligned with the highest global standards.
Earlier this year, the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) introduced the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) to distinguish the highest-integrity credits. Only protocols that meet strict criteria earn the coveted CCP label—giving buyers an independent review of protocol rigor.
Isometric has become one of the first removals-focused registries to receive CCP-Eligible status, and its Biochar Protocol is one of the first biochar methodologies to earn the official CCP label. The approval required an independent assessment that confirmed the Isometric Biochar Protocol fulfills all ten CCPs—including permanence, additionality, transparency, independence, and robust quantification. This “label of labels” will appear directly in registries and marketplaces, signaling to corporate buyers like Google and Microsoft that these credits meet the gold standard for additionality, permanence, and social and environmental safeguards.
Alongside Isometric and the ICVCM, we’re excited to continue to build a carbon removal market founded on the principles of transparency and quality. These initial Charm Biochar credits represent a huge step towards providing discerning buyers with a clear mark of quality they can trust.

When Charm delivered its first carbon removals to Stripe back in 2021, the removals were verified via a FaceTime call from Charm’s CEO to the Stripe team. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the delivery of the first-ever Isometric verified carbon dioxide removal credits (equivalent to 105 tonnes) to our customers, Stripe, Shopify and JP Morgan Chase. This is a pivotal moment for Charm and the entire Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) sector, reflecting our joint commitment to exceptional quality and scientific rigor. We’re excited to share how this delivery signifies a major turning point in voluntary carbon markets.
